VIETNAMESE FOOD CHALLENGE - EXPLORING VIETNAMESE CUISINE AT HO THI KY MARKET

Unlike traditional classroom lessons, this experience gave students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily life of local people. With a set budget and a shopping challenge list, the students were divided into small groups and tasked with completing their missions within the given time.

Although they were initially a little hesitant, the students quickly gained confidence and took the initiative to communicate in Vietnamese. From asking about prices and ordering popular local dishes such as Vietnamese grilled rice paper, skewers, and Cambodian-style sweet soup, to using their newly learned vocabulary to bargain with vendors, the students practiced Vietnamese naturally and enthusiastically throughout the challenge.

What made the experience especially interesting was that the Vietnamese phrases learned in class were put into practice in real-life situations. The students had to listen to vendors, ask questions, discuss prices, and make decisions in real time. These seemingly simple interactions became valuable opportunities for students to practice their Vietnamese communication and improve their ability to respond naturally.

Beyond completing the challenge, the students also had the chance to discover a variety of local dishes and experience the lively atmosphere of Ho Thi Ky Market, one of the familiar food destinations for locals and international visitors exploring Vietnam.

Although the trip was short, it provided the students with valuable real-life experiences. Not only did the activity help them overcome their hesitation when speaking Vietnamese with native speakers, but it also gave everyone a chance to connect with one another and gain a deeper understanding of the unique street food culture of Ho Chi Minh City.
